- BWI buys corporate license for up to 250,000 users
- Highly scalable VPN (Virtual Private Network) Software Client that complies with German classification level "Restricted"
- Automatic network detection, transparent connection establishment
Kirchheim, October 14, 2024 – When it comes to protecting their IT infrastructure, the German armed forces are once again relying on IT security products from genua: BWI GmbH, the state-owned IT services provider and main digitization partner of the German armed forces, has purchased a comprehensive TND (trusted net detection) corporate license for the highly secure VPN Software Client genuconnect. Once the product has been fully implemented, up to 250,000 end users will be able to securely access the networks of the German armed forces. The rollout of the solution has already begun.
In addition to the genuconnect Software Clients, the contract between BWI GmbH and genua GmbH includes hardware and extended support for the coming years as well as optional additional VPN capabilities.
"Made in Germany": Trust And Digital Sovereignty
"In past large-scale projects, genua has already proven to be a reliable and trustworthy partner for IT security. We are therefore delighted to continue the collaboration within the framework of the genuconnect contract," says Frank Leidenberger, Chief Executive Officer of BWI. "With genuconnect, not only are we able to implement a uniform solution to provide authorized users with secure access to the networks of the German armed forces, but also the approved products from German manufacturer genua contribute to the digital sovereignty of the German armed forces."
"The major contract with BWI is another milestone for genua," says Marc Tesch, Managing Director of genua. "It underlines the fact that with our Security by Design approach, we develop premium products that provide our customers with optimal security for their IT infrastructures and even meet the needs of large organizations with extremely high security requirements. In addition, our IT security products are developed and produced in Germany, so they help our customers to achieve a high degree of digital sovereignty."
Security For the German Armed Forces, Transparency And Convenience For Users
Working together with genua, BWI is already gradually rolling out the genuconnect Software in the German armed forces. Until now, BWI has used the hardware solution genucard – another genua product – to secure users' VPN connections. genuconnect goes much further: The VPN Software Client is embedded more deeply in the end devices and, during operation, also secures communication interfaces such as WLAN, LAN and mobile telephony.
Via the integrated TND mechanism, genuconnect detects a trustworthy IT environment – for example, the company's own network – and automatically adapts the connection process while ensuring that everything is transparent to the user. This gives the personnel of the German armed forces a high level of security and makes using their end devices more convenient for them. BWI also benefits, since it can implement the TND functionality using a uniform solution.
Highly scalable VPN (Virtual Private Network) Software Client that complies with German classification level "Restricted"
genua has designed every aspect of its VPN Software Client to suit applications with a large number of client computers. Previous successful large installations and the size of the BWI contract underline the ability of genuconnect to scale easily and flexibly for extensive application scenarios.
Another advantage of genuconnect is that the software enables workstations approved by the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) for the transmission of documents with German classification level "Restricted" to be established in trustworthy environments.
Strong Partnerships For War-Ready German Armed Forces
As the main digitization partner of the German armed forces whether at peace, during a crisis or at war, BWI plays a significant role in continuously increasing the leadership ability, operational capability and combat strength of the German armed forces. But BWI cannot perform this task alone. Therefore, it provides its services by combining its own expertise with market know-how and cultivating a resilient ecosystem of strong and reliable partners. Therefore, by collaborating with BWI, industry partners can play an important role in modernizing and digitizing the German armed forces and thus equipping them for war.
